In May of 2019, I and my 19 year old daughter were privileged to make a whirlwind study abroad trip to Sweden from Utah with Southern Utah University students and faculty. Each student had individualized agenda's to complete. The purpose of my own visit (besides observing and getting to know this beautiful and happy place) was to gain a deeper understanding of their higher education system, which I am using as my graduate professional project. The group of students visited many government offices and a few universities while there. We had excellent, knowledgeable guides in each outing and we were able to listen to really informative lectures given by university researchers and experts in their fields and to communicate with municipal leaders.
Visiting and learning about the country of Sweden has been a top priority for me since being introduced as an undergraduate student, in a Social Inequality and Justice class, to their progressive approaches to social issues that every country faces. Issues such as healthcare, gender equality, family policies, and education. I was not disappointed! Sweden competes with the two other Scandinavian nations ranking as one of the most progressive, happiest, and most equal countries in the world in The World Happiness Report.
